ThunderX3 AH7 HEX

What exactly should you look for in a good gaming headset? Gaming headsets are a dime a dozen, but depending on what you’re looking for, you may find that some suit your needs better than others. I’ve tried a lot of gaming headsets in my time, but I can definitely say that the AH7 HEX from ThunderX3 is a very good option for those looking for a proper gaming headset. Let’s take a closer look at what the AH7 HEX offers in terms of design, specs, and functionalities.

Design

Upon first glance, I’d say that the overall design of the headset looks very cool. The most noticeable feature of the design is of course, the Halo RGB LED on the outside of the earcups with the ThunderX3 logo in the middle.

The very top of the earcups comes in a sleek matte black which is then followed by a layer with grey gloss finishing. This was a really nice touch because it gives the entire headset a classy, premium look. Actually, if you take a moment to feel the headset, you can tell how sturdy it is and that it was built with high-quality materials.

The form and shape of the headset’s headband deliver a unique look which is further accentuated by the cyan color trim on the bottom of the headband.

Features

In terms of specifications and performance, the AH7 HEX definitely doesn’t disappoint. This headset features 16.8 million RGB colors that can be customized via RGB software, 50mm drivers, and virtual 7.1 surround sound. The cable is a 1.8m braided cable with a gold-plated USB.

The earcups are foldable, so it’s portable and easier to carry around. The headband is claimed to be “self-adjustable”, which basically means that the material of the headband is softer and has a lot of flexibility. Putting it on, I was actually quite surprised by how comfortable it feels. It adapts well to the shape and size of my head without having to adjust it a whole lot.

The AH7 HEX comes with leatherette ear cushions and also provides you with an extra pair of interchangeable mesh fabric cushions that you can easily switch out for. Personally, I think that the mesh fabric cushions feel better as they don’t make you sweat as much.

Sound Quality

This headset comes with a detachable microphone that’s bendable so you can easily adjust its position. Noise canceling capabilities ensure that you don’t capture any unwanted external audio. I tested the microphone of the AH7 HEX and this is probably the number one thing I would want to improve about this headset. If you listen to my mic test at 1:46 in the video, you can hear that the sound quality of the mic is not the best. Though, this is a common problem that a lot of gaming headsets have.

This headset is, however, very good for listening to music and gaming with. 50mm drivers together with 7.1 virtual surround sound deliver an immersive and dynamic sound experience. In-line controls allow you to mute and turn on audio, play and pause songs, and adjust the volume with ease.

ThunderX3 HEX Software

The AH7 HEX is completely customizable using the ThunderX3 HEX Software. With this software you’ll be able to equalize the headset by selecting one of 7 equalizer presets or creating your own preset. Actually, the default audio presets aren’t that great but if you want, you can tweak the equalizer yourself to get much better audio quality.

You can also control the mic, volume, frequency and even apply an effect that changes the sound of your voice. With access to 16.8 million colors, you’ll be able to customize the headset to display your favorite colors and control up to 6 lighting effects:

Flow
Wave
Radar
Cycle
Breathe
Solid Color

Summary

Overall, the ThunderX3 AH7 HEX is well designed, has everything you could ask for in a quality gaming headset, and is very comfortable. It’s super easy to customize the RGB and lighting effects and looks great with its Halo LED design. At the end of the day, even though the quality of mic and default equalizer presets leave something to be desired, this headset is a nice option and would look fantastic with any gaming setup.
